It blows people’s minds when they find out that cocaine is legally less restricted than marijuana. Illegal drugs in the United States are classified through a scheduling system by the DEA, with Schedule I being the most restricted and considered the most dangerous of substances. According to Amanda Reiman of the Drug Policy Alliance, because of outdated science and early 20th-century prejudices, marijuana was placed in Schedule I while cocaine was in Schedule II because it’s used as a numbing agent in surgeries. Why the street prices of the drugs don’t reflect this disparity is another topic altogether.
