Hemp is one of the fastest growing plants on Earth, and is a strain of the Cannabis plant known as Cannabis Sativa L. It is usually low in THC and high in CBD and can be legally grown in many countries.
It has been grown by humans for thousands of years and is a highly durable crop used for industrial, medicinal and agricultural purposes among others, such as reinforcing concrete, insulation, plaster, ropes bioplastics and crop rotation.
It is highly useful for sustainable living, as it can drain soil of poisonous substances and heavy metals, suppresses weed growth and has minimal water usage. It also absorbs CO2 during the growth process, and when used in concrete, it continues to absorb CO2 throughout its lifetime as its mixes with lime, resulting in a mineralisation process which extracts CO2 from the air. This effect is amplified when water is added during application of the ‘Hempcrete’.
